There are plenty of codecs QuickTime doesn’t understand naturally. So in order to use the great functions QuickTime provides you might want to pimp that tool yourself. Start with Perian, followed by Flip4Mac and head over to Apple’s own suggestions. Finally add Avid support by installing their codecs.

Apple’s free QuickTime Player offers a simple yet useful sound editing feature. Just open the song and select “Edit” –> “Trim” from the menu bar. Now you can listen and adjust the song legth to your liking. Helpful if you have to shorten a title to create a personal iPhone ringtone.
Open Source component for QuickTime and Apple’s Quick Look feature. Perian adds support for many video formats, among them Windows Media Video (WMV), FLV and Flash Video.
With QuickTime X you can record your screen actions on your Mac. Just go to “File” and select “New Screen Recording”. It sits in your application folder and is free!
Plays Windows Media Files (WMV, WMA) in your browser and in QuickTime. Licence: Freeware.
